Travel Between Budapest and Vienna ... With Wine!
There’s a reason so many travelers visit both Budapest and Vienna—they are two of Europe’s most alluring cities. If you’ve got these two cities on your radar, let us transfer you and take you wine touring along the way. This tour focuses on the regions between Budapest and Vienna—particularly the Sopron wine region in Hungary and the Burgenland wine region in Austria. You’ll see a range of architecture—from Medieval structures and Baroque palaces to interesting village homes. The day includes visits to two wineries, one on the Hungarian side and one on the Austrian side, allowing you to compare and contrast the different styles.
The route takes us through Sopron in northwestern Hungary to the shallow Lake Fertő (Lake Neusiedl), which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and straddles the Austrian/Hungarian border. Heading through Burgenland, which is Austria’s most varied wine region—producing reds, whites, and even sweet botrytized wines—you’ll taste blaufrankisch and discover why it is known as Austria’s red wine capital. This region is dotted with castles and aristocratic homes. Some of the most stunning are the two Eszterházy family castles—one in Fertőd, Hungary (modeled after Versailles) and the other in Eisenstadt, Austria. We’ll make time to visit Rust, a lovely village on the shore of reed-covered Lake Fertő / Lake Neusiedl, the second largest steppe lake in Central Europe. When the storks make their annual spring arrival to Rust, residents welcome them and keep a running count. Lunch will be at a restaurant or wine tavern serving regional specialties.
