Description
It has been more than a decade since winemakers in the Tokaj region have begun to seriously focus on producing dry wines from the furmint grape, which has become the white grape to signify Hungary’s exciting future potential. In the beginning, winemakers didn’t know how the variety would react to being produced in a dry style. But the experiment has turned out to be a great success, showing that dry furmint works well with oak and has great ageing potential. The Karádi-Berger Winery is a small family winery in in the village of Erdőbénye, located in a hundreds of year old house which once belonged to an Armenian winemaker. Before becoming fascinated by the idea of making wine in Tokaj, Zsolt worked as a journalist in Budapest. Zsolt is also the brains behind the popular “Wine, Shine…Bénye” festival, which is held annually in the gardens of Erdőbénye. This furmint from the Palandor vineyard is typically fresh and refined; has gorgeously integrated oak and a hint of toastiness; and has a creamy texture and pure focused lemon, orange peel, and grapefruit flavors. With a refreshing acidity (which signifies Tokaj), it has a bit of spiciness and minerality. This wine is is already five years old, but there is no sign of tiredness. It’s a great food wine, and it’s hard to think of anything that it won’t go well with.
