Description
An excellent vintage with a hot summer, a long autumn, and optimal conditions for the development of Botritys cinerea (noble rot), enabling top quality aszú berries with high sugar content and intense flavours to be picked. Made in more or less the same way it has been for centuries with a little help from modern technology to bring freshness and zest. The botrytised and shrivelled aszú berries were added to the base wine, with 125kg of aszú grapes going into each 136-litre Gönci barrel. The fermentation then took 60 days, which was followed by two and a half years of ageing in the barrels. Amber colour, stunning aromas and flavours of prune, sultana, dark chocolate, tobacco, vanilla, orange peel, mushroom and earthiness. Lovely tension and combination of youthful and mature notes, very long on the palate with rich botrytis. The 8.4 g/l of acidity cuts through the 150 g/l of residual sugar nicely to bring complexity and stops the wine from being cloying. Great by itself in place of dessert. Oremus is owned by leading Spanish winery Bodegas Sicilia and the fact that such a prestigious investor chose Tokaj as the location for its sole foreign winery speaks volumes about Tokaj’s terroir and legendary reputation, especially for botrytised sweet wines.
