Description
Olaszrizling comes into its own in the black volcanic basalt soils on the beautifully situated vineyards on Somló Hill. It is one of the few places where Olaszrizling grows side by side with the usually more coveted Furmint and Hárslevelű grapes, yet here Olaszrizling is capable of achieving greatness and can match its more illustrious rivals every bit of the way. Károly Kolonic harvests tiny yields of concentrated grapes that are organically cultivated with only copper, sulfur and orange oil sprayed on the vines to protect them. It was harvested at the end of September, spontaneously fermented in oak barrels and then aged in oak barrels for 12 months. It exudes Olaszrizling’s vegetal and floral notes, as well as Somló’s characteristic sour fruit. Full-bodied for the grape with baked apple rather than fresh green apple. It has the kind of powerful mid palate that many Olaszrizling’s lack. Real umami on the finish, as well as green fruit and pear. Ideal with white meat dishes.
